Mongolia finishes second in 2009 Judo World Cup

The Chinggis Khaan 2009 Judo World Cup Tournament in Mongolia has concluded November 1. The major judo wrestlers from China and Iran didn't compete in the tournament even though it was one of the major qualifying games for the 2012 London Olympics. A probable explanation for the absence may be the increase of the H1N1 virus cases in Mongolia during the last few weeks. The State Emergency Commission has advised not to hold any cultural and sports events, but the Mongolian Judo Association decided not to postpone such a major event.

As the hosting country, the Mongolian team had an advantage of putting 4 wrestlers in each of the 7 weight classes, whereas other countries could put in only 2 in each weight class. As the representatives of the country, Mongolian judokas* were comfortable in their own arena, winning 5 gold, 6 silver and 16 bronze medals, a total of 27 medals.

Of the 128 male and female judokas from 13 countries, judokas from South Korea team took 1st place, taking home 7 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.

Each of the gold medal winners was awarded $3,000, silver $2,000, and bronze $1000 from the 2012 London Olympics Qualifying Tournament prize fund of $100,000.

On the first day of the games, Team Mongolia, led by the 66kg weight class World Champion Kh.Tsagaanbaatar, brought 5 gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze medals. Such results were regarded a good omen for the whole team and raised their spirits.

* Though traditionally only those of 4th Dan or higher were called "judoka," when suffix -ka is added to a noun, it means a person with expertise or special knowledge on that subject.
